What guides us

A calm, well-prepared approach to riding together

We are riders first. The pages here gather the practical thinking behind each meet-up so newcomers and regulars can take part with confidence.

People before pace

Our groups stay together. Ride leaders set a sociable speed, regroup at junctions and make sure nobody is left guessing about the next turn.

Routes you can read

Distance, elevation and surface are written plainly so you can decide what suits you on the day.

Open to first-timers

Our introductory loops are short and flat, with plenty of stops to take in the view and ask questions.

Notes, not promises

Everything published here is general informational content about cycling logistics and group etiquette. It is not coaching, medical or fitness advice, and it does not claim any specific outcome.

Quiet roads, shared respect

We favour lanes and traffic-free paths, ride courteously and follow the Highway Code, leaving each place as we found it.

Choose your morning

Four ways to join, sorted by pace not pressure

Each meet-up is described by its rough distance and rolling speed rather than fitness labels. Read the format, picture your own pace, and pick the one that sounds enjoyable.

  • Towpath Wander. A short, flat introduction along the canal network with frequent stops.
  • Sunday Social. A steady half-day loop through the lanes with a café pause in the middle.
  • Rolling Country. A longer route with gentle climbs for riders comfortable on the road.
  • Lantern Loop. A short, well-lit evening ride during the lighter months.

How we keep groups together

A clear brief

Every ride opens with a short talk on the route, hand signals and where we will regroup.

A leader and a sweep

One rider sets the front pace; another stays at the back so the group never splits.

Planned regroups

We pause at the top of climbs and major turns so everyone arrives together.

A morning, hour by hour

What a typical open ride looks like

Times are a guide. Weather, group size and the chosen route all shift the rhythm of the day.

08:30

Meet and check-in

We gather at the agreed point, say hello and run a quick look over tyres, brakes and lights before anything else.

08:50

Route brief

The leader walks through the map, the regroup points and any junctions that need extra care.

09:00

Roll out

We set off at a sociable pace, keeping a tidy line and signalling clearly to one another.

10:30

Café pause

A relaxed stop for a drink and a chat. Nobody is in a hurry to leave.

12:00

Back to the start

We finish where we began, swap notes on the route and share the next meet-up date.

In their words

“I had not ridden in years. The Towpath Wander was unhurried, well explained, and I never felt out of place. I read the route notes the night before and knew exactly what the morning held.”

Why people return

Familiar faces, fresh routes

Many riders come back because the format is reassuringly predictable: clear information, a friendly group and routes that are chosen with care. We share what we know and let each person ride within their own comfort.

  • Routes published before the day, with distance and surface detail.
  • No sign-up fee for open community meet-ups.
  • Honest descriptions so you can opt out of anything that does not suit you.
Good to know

Questions we hear most often

Any roadworthy bike in good order is welcome on the shorter formats. The route notes mention the surface so you can judge whether your bike suits the day.

Open community meet-ups are free to join. Any café stops or personal refreshments are simply paid for by each rider on the day.

Our shorter formats are designed to stay together. A sweep rider stays at the back and we regroup regularly, so there is no pressure to keep up a set speed.

No. The content across this website is general and informational. It describes how our group rides and shares cycling etiquette, and it is not a substitute for professional guidance about your own circumstances.
